Our motto at Fabey Dental is “Passion - Possibilities - Precision.” Precision is perhaps one of the most important factors in providing exceptional dental care. Without it, restorations are prone to breakage, uncomfortable, and unnatural in appearance. When the utmost care is taken to be precise in measurements and design, we’re able to ensure that our patients achieve optimal results. This is why we’re excited to introduce the Medit 3D scanner to our dental practice.
What Is the Medit 3D Scanner?
Dental impressions are an important step in restorative dentistry because they allow us to create a three-dimensional model of your teeth and jaw. Until recently, impressions were taken using impression material and trays. The soft, rubber-like material was placed inside plastic trays and when patients would bite down, a mold would be created of their teeth, which, in turn, could be used in treatment planning and for designing restorations.
There are a few problems with this method, though. The first is one that you’re probably very familiar with if you’ve ever had traditional dental impressions before: it’s not comfortable! Staying still (and trying not to gag) while impression material oozes out of the plastic trays isn’t exactly a pleasant experience. Because it’s difficult not to move, it’s common for these impressions to be inaccurate. Even when an impression is a fraction of a millimeter off, it can make a restoration uncomfortable and even non-functional.
The Medit 3D intraoral scanner does away with the impression material and trays. Instead, this simple wand scans your teeth and jaw, allowing us to create a three-dimensional model on our computer. Because the scanning process is faster than the traditional impression process and because there’s no impression material needed, it’s more comfortable for you as a patient, and it provides us with a much more precise, accurate model to work from.
What Is the Medit 3D Scanner Used For?
Not every visit to our office will require the use of our new Medit 3D scanner! You can expect that any procedure that would normally call for traditional dental impressions will now require digital impressions with our intraoral scanner instead. This includes:
- Fabricating dental restorations, including crowns, inlays, onlays, bridges, and dentures
- Facilitating dental implant restorations by capturing the position of implants so restorations can be made to fit them
- Treatment planning for clear aligner orthodontic therapy (ClearCorrect) and the design and fabrication of clear aligners
With precise digital impressions, we can create restorations that look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth and that interact properly with your other teeth—in other words, when you bite down and chew, your teeth meet as they should and feel comfortable.
